How to Get Free Publicity

Getting in front of your target market is important for any business. Otherwise, how will people know that your company exists? The hard part is finding that type of publicity. There are a few tried and true ways (advertising, offsite SEO methods, etc.), but there are also some very good tactics for obtaining free publicity – take a look.

1. Donate Something

Find a nearby charity that’s holding an event, and ask that charity if they would like a free contribution from your company. This has to be a worthwhile contribution (some free passes, a free webinar, etc.), but it’s a really good way to get your product in front of people. Plus, most charities will post your logo or website link on the charity website and as part of the event marketing materials – it’s a win-win. You can feel good about donating, and you will get free publicity – what’s not to love?

2. Get on the Radar

Is there a particular blogger that’s an integral part of your industry? Try commenting on some blog posts (with a valid opinion, and not with some spammy links!) to become a part of the conversation. People will eventually wonder who you are and what you’re about – this could take some time, but it’s a great marketing tactic (and it’s free).

3. Do Good Things

Remember when your mom told you to do good deeds? Well, she was onto something. Be honest, true, and good. Do things that people will admire, recognize, and want to talk about. You will open up a world of other great people that are willing to pass along information about what you’re doing, and that includes telling others about your company.

4. Be Social

We’ve talked about this before, but it can’t be said enough times. Social networking is free! All you have to do is be an important part of the conversation.

You can do all of these things to get free publicity, and free means that you won’t have to dip into your marketing budget. All it really takes is a bit of legwork, but it’s completely worth it to get people to want to talk about what you’re doing. Once you have gained some free publicity, you can begin to spend a bit of your marketing budget on other things like trade show exhibits.
